Tour de France : Great Moment Part 3

Great moments in the history of the Tour

1952 - First finish at altitude
For this experiment, three finishes at altitude were planned: Alpe d’Huez, Sestrières, and Puy-de-Dôme. Italy’s Fausto Coppi crossed all three finish lines in front to claim his second Tour de France crown.

1964 - Anquetil: better than Bobet
Jacques Anquetil became the first rider to win Le Tour five times, the Belgian Thys and the Frenchman Bobet having triumphed three times apiece.

1969 - Return to brand-name teams
The national team formula was scrapped and the reversion to brand-name teams was made permanent.

1974 - A fifth win for Eddy Merckx
Known as “The Cannibal”, the Belgian Eddy Merckx lived up to his reputation by gobbling up the miles, setting the record for days in the Yellow Jersey (96) as well as for stage victories (34). He is also the only rider to have won all the separate classifications of Le Tour.

1975 - First finish on the Champs-Élysées
After the Parc des Princes and then La Cipale, it was the turn of the Champs-Élysées to serve as the finish for Le Tour.

1976 - An eighth podium for Poulidor
Raymond Poulidor never donned the Yellow Jersey, not even for one day. But at the age of 40, he mounted the event podium for an eighth time.
